چکیده

Spatial reasoning with description logic has become an important research topic in the recent past. Several authors dealt with the problem of finding logical frameworks in which concept definitions can be made by using also spatial operators, particularly those of the Region Connection Calculus. Lutz and Miličić investigated the formal properties required to the concrete domain of the logical structure ALC(C) to accommodate decidable reasoning. These properties, named the patchwork property and the compactness property, along with the decidability of the constraint system C guarantee the condition of ω-admissibility which, in turn, guarantees decidability of ALC(C). Lutz and Miličić also proved that ALC(RCC8) is decidable. The expressiveness of this system is enough to define interesting concepts, but other frameworks result useful too. We investigate the combination of ALC(C) with the Cardinal Direction Calculus defined by Ligozat and propose an extension based on a combined constraint system formed by the Region Connection Calculus and the Cardinal Direction Calculus recently studied by Li. We prove that the mentioned reasoning systems are useful by comparing their expressiveness in translating natural language sentences describing concepts of common usage.

Some Practical Issues in Building a Hybrid Deductive Geographic Information System with a DL Component

We report about some preliminary issues from the DFG project “Description Logics and Spatial Reasoning” (“DLS”, DFG Grant NE 279/8-1), one of whose goals is to develop a prototypical deductive hybrid Geographic Information System (GIS) with a DL-component. In this paper we discuss the multi-dimensionality of the space of design decisions from a software engineering perspective. In order to supp...

Integrating Bipolar Fuzzy Mathematical Morphology in Description Logics for Spatial Reasoning

Bipolarity is an important feature of spatial information, involved in the expression of preferences and constraints about spatial positioning or in pairs of opposite spatial relations such as left and right. Another important feature is imprecision which has to be taken into account to model vagueness, inherent to many spatial relations (as for instance vague expressions such as close to, to t...

SBox: A Qualitative Spatial Reasoner –Progress Report–

This paper presents a method for reasoning about spatial objects and their qualitative spatial relationships (e.g. touches, overlaps etc.) on the basis of a description logic framework. We apply this method to the domain of deductive geographic information systems. In contrast to existing work, which mainly focuses on reasoning about qualitative spatial relations alone, we integrate quantitativ...

Abox Satisfiability Reduced to Terminological Reasoning in Expressive Description Logics

Description Logics knowledge bases are traditionally divided into a terminological part (Tbox), and an assertional part (Abox). However, most of recent results on practical algorithms are confined to terminological reasoning only. Due to the applications of Description Logics for databases and the so-called “Semantic Web”, there is a growing interest for practical algorithms for Abox reasoning....

Towards Practical Defeasible Reasoning for Description Logics

The formalisation of defeasible reasoning in automated systems is becoming increasingly important. Description Logics (DLs) are nowadays the main logical formalism in the field of formal ontologies. Our focus in this paper is to devise a practical implementation for prior work that formalises a version of Rational Closure (an important type of defeasible reasoning) for DLs. We show that the con...
